Ethnic Voices
Open to: All grades and phases – ½ year course
Description: Students will learn about growing up and living in a multi-ethnic society through the voices of authors. African American authors as well as Hispanic American authors will be the main focus of the study. Course incorporates audio and visual mediums in addition to lecture and discussion.
Topics Covered: (Hispanic) immigration, cultural preservation, social issues (African American) Slavery, Emancipation, Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Movement, Late Century
African American Authors: Frances Harper, Zora Neale Hurston, Toni Morrison, Langston Hughes, Terry McMillian, James Baldwin, Alice Walker, Maya Angelou, Wallace Thurman, Ernest Gaines
Hispanic Authors: Isabel Allende, Rudolpho Anaya, Julia Alvarez, Octavio Paz Richard Rodriquez, Esmeralda Santiago, Luis Rodriguez, Jimmy Santiago Baca Denise Chavez, Federico Garcia Lorca
Assessment: Tests, quizzes, papers, creative writings, projects, presentations.
