HEALTH COURSE OUTLINE Welcome to Health education! All students in the state of Delaware must pass 1/2 credit of high school level health in order to graduate. Our textbook is the 2001 edition of Prentice-Hall Health, Skills for Wellness. The materials you must bring to class are: a notebook (may be single subject or a section of a larger notebook), a folder to keep loose papers, handouts, and returned tests in, a writing utensil, and sometimes your book. Grades will be based on a combination of points earned on assignments, quizzes, participation, homework, projects, and tests. Grades will be updated once a week. Your textbook must be covered at all times. The Delaware Department of Education Health Education Curriculum Framework includes the following areas of study: Emotional Health Alcohol and Other Drugs Physical Activity Injury Prevention Nutrition Personal and Consumer Health Family Life and Sexuality Tobacco Community and Environmental Health The National Health Education Standards will be implemented throughout the semester. These standards are: 1. Concepts-students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention. 2. Accessing Information-students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and health-promoting products and sevices. 3. Self-Management-students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and reduce health risks. 4. Analyzing Influences-students will analyze the influence of culture, media, technology, and other factors on health. 5. Interpersonal Communication-students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal commuincation skills to enhance health. 6. Decision Making / Goal Setting-students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting and decision making skill to enhance health. 7. Advocacy-students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.
Points to remember: 1. Your final exam will be comprehensive, so you must keep track of ALL materials and returned tests in order to study throughly for the final. 2. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to check with your teacher to arrange to make-up any missed work. 3. Homework assignments will be written on the board in the upper right hand corner. Be sure to write them in your day planner. 4. Your grade is based on a points system the total points divided by the students total number of points. 5. I am happy to give assistance to any student who would like after-school help. Please speak to me after class to arrange a day and time for this help.
