Calling Junior and Senior Parents To Help With After-Prom Planning
It is early in the school year, but After-Prom meetings
are already well underway. To be a part of After-
Prom, you do not need to have a special skill, attend
meetings, or be up all night. If you are willing to help
and make even a minimal time commitment, there is
probably a job for you. The next planning meeting
will be Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in CSW Room 326.
A final planning meeting will be held on Tuesday,
Nov. 13 at 7:00 p.m. in Room 326. Please plan
to attend. If you can’t attend, are you willing to make
phone calls, hunt down necessary items, or do other
similar tasks? After the first of the year, there will be
painting and decoration parties and requests for food
and prizes donations.

The Charter School of Wilmington Board of Directors

Service Learning Opportunity at Lakota Indian Reservation
Spend a week on a Native American reservation in
South Dakota. Charter’s first service learning experience
will provide students the opportunity to serve
the impoverished members of the Lakota tribe, to be
immersed in the Sioux culture, to learn about their
history and spirituality, and to visit nearby Wounded
Knee Memorial, Singing Horse Trading Post, the
Badlands and many sites.
While on the reservation, students will build houses,
repair existing houses and supply bunk beds for families.
Students will interact directly with the Lakota
people and emerge with an understanding of their
beliefs and experiences, both historical and current.
The school is organizing this trip through the Re-
Member organization at www.re-member.org. For
more information please contact Ms. Lober at
rlober@charterschool.org.

Smart Drive
SmartDrive is a free, online program of driver education
reinforcement aimed at students who already
have their driver’s licenses. The program was conceived
by Delmarva Broadcasting Company in 2004 in
response to a rash of untimely and unnecessary
deaths of several Delaware high school students. A
group of professionals developed this comprehensive
program to better educate and motivate young drivers
to operate at a higher level and demonstrate
greater responsibility and maturity before and
during every moment they are behind the wheel of a
motor vehicle. Charter students will be attending an
assembly on October 9 to learn more about the program.
This program starts November 1 and continues
through January 31 and consists of three instructional
student modules and one “bonus” parent module. So
don’t wait, get in the Smart Drive seat and get on the
road to driving smarter! Enroll online today at
www.smartdrivede.org

School Closings
If the weather necessitates a late opening or a school
cancellation, the announcement will be made by 6
a.m. The announcement will be made specifically for
The Charter School of Wilmington. The information
will be posted on Charter’s website at www.charterschool.
org and it will be broadcast on local radio stations
(WILM, WDEL, WJBR and WNRK). We will also try
to use NBC Channel 10 and ABC Channel 6.
If the Red Clay School District is closed and Charter is
opened, the students will be dismissed at noon, since
cafeteria service will not be available.

Magazine Sale Kickoff
Charter’s first fundraiser of the year is right around
the corner. Our magazine sale will start in mid-
October, and it will end in November. The success of
the program depends on your participation. If you
have subscriptions to be renewed, especially those
ordered last year or if you would like to order a new
subscription, please plan to order through our program.
Renewal orders will extend the expiration date
of your current subscriptions. Don’t forget to ask
friends, neighbors and relatives to order or renew
their subscriptions with Charter.

Sports Physicals for Winter Sports
Winter sports begin in November. All athletes must
have a DIAA sports physical on file before that
date. Physicals must be dated after May 1, 2007 and
the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association form
must be used. This form can be obtained from the
nurse’s office, main office, Wellness Center, or downloaded
from the CSW website (under the Nurse’s
Office.) Make an appointment now with your family
physician or the Wellness Center. Physicals are performed
at no charge at the Wellness Center. (Call
651-2100.) Return the completed physical to the
school nurse. If you have any questions, please call
Karen Micale, R.N., at 651-2727 Ext. 225.
