Course Syllabus

1. The grading policy as outlined in the student handbook for the Charter School of Wilmington will be strictly followed.

2. Grades for reporting purposes will be calculated using a percentage system. Percentages will be awarded in the categories and quantities as follows:

  • Homework and Quizzes
10%
  • Projects and Tests
65%
  • Log Book

25%

3. Assignment of grades:

4. Make-up of work following absence(s):

5. Collaboration vs. plagiarism:

Sharing of ideas and work is encouraged in appropriate settings, such as team or peer assessment, but plagiarism of individual work is a grave offense. Although you may work in a group gathering data in a lab, all the calculations and answers to questions should be your own. Suspected sharing or copying of individual work, regardless of the type of work, will result in a grade of zero for all parties involved.

6. Class participation and professional demeanor:

Students are strongly encouraged to participate in class, both as individuals and as part of the cooperative learning (team/group) environment. Many assessments will be made on group work, including cooperation, contribution, and communication. Students are expected to be willing to present solutions and defend positions, both for the teacher and the class, via speaking as well as writing.

7. Homework:

Homework will be checked most days at your seat. Full credit will be given only if you provide a diagram (if appropriate), show how you arrived at your answer (include the formula if you are using one), include units, and the work is done neatly.

8. Deadlines:

Homework and other assignments are due at the beginning of class. Late work will not be accepted. You will receive 50% of the credit for an assignment if you turn it in at the beginning of class the following school day. Assigned work more than one day late will not be accepted. The only valid reason to submit an assignment late is if you were absent from school, became ill in school, family emergency, etc.

9. Tutoring and help sessions:

If you feel that you are confused or falling behind, please see me to schedule extra help before, during, or after school.

10. The classroom:

Do not touch equipment set up around the classroom unless it is a part of a scheduled lab activity and you have been briefed on the procedure of the lab and proper operation of the equipment. Anyone knowingly abusing the equipment or computers will be barred from taking part in labs or computer work, will be responsible for the repair costs of the equipment, and may face other disciplinary action.
