Science Competitions for Students
Charter has a rich history of participation and success in physics and engineering competitions at both the state and national level. Four Charter students made the semi-final round of the tryouts for the National Physics Olympiad Team. This placed them in the top 200 physics students in the country. This year Chor Hang Lam made the National Team which placed him in the top twenty physics students in the country. Two years ago a Charter student, Chintan Hossain, represented the United States at the International Physics Olympiad.where he won a gold medal and helped lead the United States Team to first place in the world.
Our varsity engineering teams placed 1st, 2nd, and 4th in the 2005 state TEAMS competition and our varsity A team was crowned National Champions for 2005. Charter has also been state champions and has placed nationally in Science Olympiad, Envirothon, and Odyssey of the Mind.
Below is a partial list of science competitions open to Charter students. Updates and additions will be posted to this web page as they become available.
- TEAMS engineering competition: The competition is held in early spring at the University of Delaware. It is held on a Saturday from 8:30 AM - 1:30 PM. Students work in teams of eight in answering a series of complex engineering problems. Any written resource is allowed. Students compete at both the varsity and JV level. There is no limit on how many students may participate. There is no cost to participate. The organizational and registration meeting for this contest will be held in October. The date of this meeting will be posted on this web page. Visit jets.org for more information.
- National Physics Olympiad Team: First round of the tryouts are held at Charter in late January. There is no cost to compete. This competition is for those students that have a great passion for physics. The multiple choice section of the first round of the tryouts is at the level of the AP Physics B exam and the free response questions are at the level of most difficult AP Physics C mechanics response problems. Students must be willing to spend several hours a week during the first semester practicing old Olympiad problems. See Mr. Stover in room 329 if you are interested in participating. Visit aapt.org for more information.
- West Point Bridge Contest. Students build virtual bridges and submit their designs electronically. Competition is held in January. The organizational and registration meeting for this contest will be held in October. The date of this meeting will be posted on this web page.
- Science Bowl. A science version of academic bowl. We have never competed in this competition in the past but we will this year if there is enough interest. More information will be posted at this site as it becomes available.
- Science Olympiad and Envirothon. See Mrs. Gupta for information.
- Odyssey of the Mind. See Dr. Vasta for information
