National Honor Society

The National Honor Society is an active service organization within our school community. Membership is a privilege earned by students who have achieved the standards set by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The criteria for election to the National Honor Society are based on the student’s scholarship, character, service, and leadership qualifications. Membership in the National Honor Society is both an honor and a responsibility. Students selected for membership are expected to continue to demonstrate the qualities of scholarship, character, service, and leadership by which they were selected. A student’s first opportunity to apply for NHS occurs after their sophomore year. The National Honor Society is open to rising Juniors and Seniors.

Scholarship: Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher to apply. Students can log into HAC after the final report card has been issued at the end of their sophomore year to determine if they meet the 3.75 eligibility requirement.

Leadership: Student leaders are resourceful, good problem solvers who promote school initiatives and ideals and actively engage in efforts to improve the quality of school life. Leadership activities can be drawn from school or community activities while working for others and alongside other leaders.

Service: Students must commit to service by continually contributing voluntarily to school or outside the community. Service activities are those done for or on behalf of others (not including immediate family members) for which no compensation has been given.

Character: Students will demonstrate outstanding character by upholding principles of morality and ethics and the rules of The Charter School of Wilmington. It should be noted that no candidate shall be admitted to the CSW chapter of the National Honor Society with documented academic dishonesty.

Selection Process: Once the final 10th-grade report card is issued, students may log in to HAC to view their report card to determine if their cumulative weighted GPA meets the 3.75 scholarship eligibility. An application form will be available to students at the start of their junior school year. It will include documentation of service and leadership and an extended response question. A selection committee of five faculty members will review each candidate's applications and discipline files (including any academic integrity incidents), consider pertinent teacher input, and vote on selection. The advisors and administration cannot serve as members of the faculty selection committee. The application serves as the primary source of information for the selection committee, so students should complete it thoroughly and follow all directions. Students may apply at the end of their junior year for admission into NHS as a senior.
